This season of life can be unpredictable. Whether everything goes to plan, or nothing does, having a knowledgeable and compassionate doula by your side can make all the difference.

Things you might
be wondering:

Who should consider a doula?

While studies are clear that all journeys to motherhood could benefit from the support of a doula, a very common perspective from mothers who look back on their experiences is that first-time mothers and those with less robust support networks top the list in terms of potential benefit.

Which should I consider: a doula, or a midwife?

If a midwife is available to support you in delivery, you are in great hands. Our healthcare system is full of incredible people, but there are not always enough staff on hand for you to receive consistent care. As shifts change, you may see many different faces throughout your labour and after-care, whereas your doula stays with you continuously. Every professional brings different things to the table; midwives provide medical care, and doulas focus on advocacy and non-medical comfort & support, so that you have a knowledgeable and compassionate advocate every step of the way.

Should I consider a doula even if my partner will be with me in the delivery room?

Pregnancy, birth, and postpartum can be a roller coaster for the mother as well as the other support people. From quietly tagging your partner out for a snack break during a long labour, to offering resources and information to mothers-in-law post partum, doulas invest in your support network so that they can support you and your baby as much as possible.

What about pain management and C-sections?

Every mother, baby, and birth experience is completely unique. A doula can share information as you consider your birth plan and help ensure that your plan is executed by hospital staff (and navigate any surprises that arise along the way) so that you can be fully present during delivery. A doula will also help you navigate your recovery postpartum. These are very important considerations and a knowledgable advocate can make all the difference.

As a doula, what qualifications do you have?

Doulas are unregulated in Canada, similar to counselors, so it's important to learn about the unique qualifications each doula brings to the table. My training is through DONA International, the world’s largest doula organization & most widely recognized certification. I selected DONA because of their evidence-based approach, including training and education on pain management, lactation, and post-partum care. My college education includes courses on psychology and mental health first aid, which are important for recognizing the signs of PPD (Post-Partum Depression) and other related conditions.
If you have shopped around you'll notice that my prices are lower than many doulas. This is because I have chosen to adjust the cost to make this form of support more accessible to those who need it. Broken down to an hourly rate, these rates are approximately equivalent to what a massage therapist or aesthetician would charge, so that I can sustain my ability to offer these services long term. If the cost of care remains a barrier for you, I'd encourage you to still reach out so we can have a conversation.

About me:

Karlene James
Mom, Full-Spectrum Doula
My mission is to invest in the well-being of families in Southern Manitoba (I'm based in Winkler but am able to serve outside upon request as well). I believe everyone should have the support and advocacy they need on their journey.

I'm here because of my own journey to motherhood.

When I was expecting my son, I prepared as I was able. And, if everything had gone smoothly, that probably would have been enough—but our journey was unpredictable and difficult, like many are.

After our family recovered and I was able to reflect and ask questions, I was able to see many areas where things could have been different with more knowledge, advocacy, and support.

My experiences as a mom, friend, and sister have shaped my understanding of what it means for expecting and recovering parents to be adequately supported, and this has sparked a passion for coming alongside to fill those gaps as I am able.
