This season of life can be unpredictable. Whether everything goes to plan, or nothing does, I believe that having trusted support people can make all the difference.

Things you might
be wondering:

Why consider a doula?

Doula support can be beneficial to everyone, regardless of the situation. Advocacy, knowledge, physical, mental, and emotional support can always be helpful. A few common reasons for considering support  are: first-time parents, past difficult birth experiences, anxiety and/or other mental health struggles. Together we can navigate information and resources, talk through nerves and anxiety, and make a plan for your physical and mental wellbeing before, during, and after birth.

As a doula, what qualifications do you have?

It’s important to learn about the unique qualifications each doula brings to the table, so that you can have the best fit for you and your family. My doula training is through DONA International. This covered informational and practical care, also CPR/First Aid, IPAC for birth workers, and Food Health & Safety. Prior to doula training, I obtained a BA, where I focused on child development, psychology, and mental health. Lastly, I am working on fertility and loss support certifications for 2026.

Should I consider a doula even if my partner will be with me in the delivery room?

Pregnancy, birth, and postpartum can be a roller coaster for the mother as well as the partner and support people. Doula care is beneficial for everyone. You have extra hands to provide labour care, breaks for the partner, naps for everyone, care for the new baby, and care for the postpartum parent’s mental & emotional health. I invest in you and your support network for your overall and continued health.

What about medical decisions and birth plans?

Every mother, baby, and birth experience is completely unique. I can share information & resources as you consider your birth plan and help you navigate the birth process & any surprises that arise along the way. We work with your medical team to help find the best plan for you.

Which should I consider: a doula, or a midwife?

If a midwife is available to support you in delivery, you are in great hands. Our healthcare system is full of incredible people, but unfortunately there are not enough staff on hand for everyone to have access to a midwife. As shifts change, you may see many different faces throughout your labour and postpartum. As a doula, I am able to stay with you continuously. At the end of the day, every professional brings different things to the table; and the best support is provided when we all work together as a team for your wellbeing.
If you have shopped around you may notice that my prices are generally lower. This is because I have chosen to adjust the cost in effort to make support more accessible. If the cost of care remains a barrier, or if you're looking for something you don't see listed, Please reach out! Let's find the best care for you.

About me:

Karlene James
Mom, Full-Spectrum Doula
My mission is to invest in the well-being of families in Southern Manitoba (I'm based in Winkler but am able to serve outside upon request). I believe everyone should have the support and advocacy they need on their journey.

I'm here because of my own journey to motherhood.

When I was expecting my son, I prepared as I was able. Unfortunately our journey was unpredictable and difficult, like many are. My mental and physical health struggled and it left me wondering what could have been done differently.

As my family recovered, I was able to reflect and ask questions. It was clear there were many areas in our birth and postpartum journey where things could have been helped with more knowledge, advocacy, and support.

Now, I want to be a part of your 'village'. My experiences as a mom, friend, and sister have shaped my understanding of what it means for expecting and recovering parents to be adequately supported. I'd love to meet you and ask: "How can I help?"
